Description
Mr. Jacobs was famously a proponent of buzzing practice both on the mouthpiece and on a rim or cutaway mouthpiece. Many mistakenly call rims visualizers. The real value is to isolate the muscle fibers of your lips while buzzing. Jacobs cautioned students not to buzz their lips without the use of a rim. Buzzing without a rim involves many more muscles than if the lips are supported with a rim. He recommends that buzzing should only be performed in the lower mid-range and for very short periods—two or three minutes maximum. Use of the cutaway has the enhanced benefits of rim buzzing while fingering the instrument. The rim is based on the CHI Jacobs 2.
